....depends on what the definition of "dimensions" is. if space is defined as the conventional x-y-z orthogonal coordinate system then there are only 3 known dimensions even though more than 3 dimensions is mathematically possible

According to the current String theories, a minimum of 11 dimensions are not just possible but required for the universe to exist as it does.
These are pretty useless dimenstions though as they are (apparently) curled up and cannot be accessed. So much for hyperspace!
